What is FLAC File and how to play Flac files on Windows, Mac OS or Linux.

| More

FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) is a lossless audio format and the audio is compressed without any loss in quality. As it is lossless by nature it does not remove information from the audio stream, as in MP3, AAC, and Vorbis audio formats. If any audio file is encoded to FLAC then the size of the file is reduced to about 40 to 50 percent (46% according to their own comparison), thus reducing the storage requirements.

ZIP compress a CD-quality audio file by 10 – 20% but FLAC achieves compression rates of 30 – 50% for most audio files. You can easily burn more songs on CD without any loss in the quality and thus saving your money

If you wish to preserve your audio collections, make sure you use FLAC. Because, if the original audio is lost or damaged, you can easily recover an exact duplicate of the original data using a FLAC copy of the audio tracks at any time. Contrary to this, an exact restoration from a lossy archive (e.g., MP3) of the same data is impossible.

FLAC supports tagging; cover art, and fast seeking. FLAC is freely available and supported on most operating systems, including Windows, “UNIX” (Linux, *BSD, Solaris, OS X, IRIX), BeOS, OS/2, and Amiga and is free and open source royalty-free by nature.
