To reduce the size either remove the audio from your clip or reduce the audio quality .The size can also be decreased by reducing the frame rate to 10 frames/second or compressing the clip using MPEG-4 compression. There are lot more easier options that are available for free and are much handy.
Windows Movie Maker
It is a program that comes along with Windows XP suite. It includes options for reducing file sizes significantly.
Go to Start –Program – Windows Movie Maker
After launching Windows Movie Maker you will notice a “Story Board” displaying a number of blank frames. Under Capture Video (situated in left side) there are options for importing a file from your My Videos folder or importing a file directly from your camera. Click and select the video.
Drag the thumbnail of video into the first box of the Story Board and click on File – Save Movie As. You will be prompted for an option to save the video with a reduced file size and selecting it can reduce the resolution quality of the video. Try and play with these options to see which one provides you a video of smaller file size with slightly diminished quality.
Zwei-Stein Editor
It has an extensive effects selection and a unique, flat interface that lets the user easily set and change key frames for every effect and cropping rectangle. The utility has many advance features that you will not find elsewhere.
1. Download the software (freeware 0$) and execute the exe file.
2. Click File – Import – Import Video Clip. Select and open the video file (*.avi) you want to compress in size.
3. Click Destination – Video Format. Choose minimal video resolution or any other which suits to your requirements.
4. Click Destination – Frames per second. Choose desired fps value (minimal or acceptable).
5. Click Destination -> Export -> Video for Windows -> choose filename. Select sound quality (to minimize file size use average quality). OK. Choose XviD.
6. Done! AVI file size has been reduced.
The application is best for reducing the size of videos that are larger in size. It can produce videos with a resolution of 8×8 or 16000×16000 (~200 Megapixels / frame) and many sizes in between (custom). You have full automation control for all track and effect variables using key frames (cropping, zooming, panning, volume, rotation, opacity, key-color etc…). There are many other advance feature that Zwei-Stein Editor provides.
