Quickly Search mails in Gmail using labels

| More

Gmail is very fast and has got great features embedded in it.My mail box have more than 12000 mails and it is increasing day by day.But if you want to search for mails then simply “search mail” search box is not sufficient. There are simple hacks available. In gmail Inbox, sent mail,Draft etc are actually labels. If you want to see starred mails in inbox which you have not read then simple type label:inbox label:unread .You will see all the unread starred mails.

You can make and use any logical combination to search the mailbox. Following are the examples:

label:chats label:starred (You will get the chat history of all starred mails)
label:spam label:unread (You will get all unread mails in spam folder)
label:starred (You will get all starred mails)
label:inbox label:unread (You will get all unread mails present in Inbox)
label:All Mail label:unread label:starred (You will get all starred unread emails irrespective of any folder Inbox,Spam,Draft etc.)

Similarly you can make your own search label to search the emails intelligently. If you think the query is too long, Gmail has shortcuts for the special labels.

^i inbox
^s spam
^k trash
^b chats
^f sent mail
^t starred messages
^r draft
^u unread mail

To find all unread messages in inbox your query become: l:^i l:^u.
To find all the unread messages that are not in the inbox? Search for: -l:^i l:^u.

The hack works similarly with your custom labels as well.Suppose you have marked 10 emails from “Technology Hacker” under label “THacker” and you want to read unread emails and starred emails from Technology Hacker then enter the following query in search box:

label:THacker label:unread label:starred

You can search for the attachments in your gmail inbox by file type easily also explained in my previous post.
