Making of Vodafone Zoozoo Advertisements-Rare Pictures

Television is bombarded with Vodafone commercials. Vodafone has given birth to the Zoozoo, an alien looking animated character created to convey a value added service (VAS) offering in each of the newly released commercials. On first look, these “zoozoo” in Vodafone TV ads may resemble animated cartoon characters. But the reality is that Zoozoos are not animated characters and are actually slim women actors from local Mumbai theatres, in white costumes that are stuffed with foam to portray the animated characters.

The production team divided the outfit of zoozoo into two parts: the body and the head. The body part of the outfit was filled with foam, while the head was attached separately. Perspex and foam was used to make the head look bigger than a human head. The thin limbs, contrasted with big bellies and a bulbous head, all add to the illusion that zoozoos are ‘smaller’ than humans. To make zoozoo look smaller than their actual size the film was shot in a high-speed format. To keep the audience projected to these characters simple sets/backdrops were created and spray painted with neutral Greys – a colour of choice so that attention isn’t diverted from the main characters.
