How to Open or Play RMVB Files in Windows,Mac,LINUX or Ubuntu

Recently I downloaded a number of popular television series from file sharing platforms like BitTorrent, eDonkey and Gnutella. But the file format was RMVB was not recognized by multimedia players. It says-“It is not a valid file format”. What should I do? Let’s first understand what RMVB file format is and how to open or play RMVB files on media player?

What is RMVB File Format?

RealMedia Variable Bitrate (RMVB) is a variable bitrate extension of the RealMedia multimedia container format developed by RealNetworks. RMVB files are extremely popular for distributing Asian content, especially anime and Chinese television episodes.

How to Open or Play RMVB Files?

Below is the list of software applications using which you can easily open or play RMVB files in Windows, LINUX/Ubuntu, or Mac OS –

WINDOWS

Method#1-Using Real Player

1. Download and install the latest version of RealPlayer
2. Double click on RMVB file, it will open a window prompting ‘Windows cannot Open this file’.
3. Click the radio button-‘Select the program from the list’.
4. Click Ok. It will open the window ‘Open With’.
5. Search for the Real Player program and then select the ‘Real Player’.
6. Check the button – ‘Always use the selected program to open this kind of file’.

You can now play RMVB files. Next time onward you need not to repeat the steps as suggested above. Once you double click the RMVB file, it should automatically launch RealPlayer to playback the file.

Method#2-Using Real Alternative

Real Alternative allows you to play RealMedia files without having to install RealPlayer/RealOne Player. It supports RealAudio (.ra .rpm), RealMedia (.rm .ram .rmvb .rpx .smi .smil), RealText (.rt), ReadPix (.rp), RealMedia embedded in webpages. .smi and .smil files. Follow the steps to open or play rmvb files-

1. Download and install the latest version of Real Alternative
2. Double click on RMVB file; it will open a window prompting ‘Windows cannot Open this file’.
3. Click the radio button-‘Select the program from the list’.
4. Click Ok. It will open the window ‘Open With’.
5. Search for the Real Player program and then select the ‘Real Player’.
6. Check the button – ‘Always use the selected program to open this kind of file’.

LINUX

Method#1-Using Real Player

Follow the simple steps below-

1)       Visit the Real Player for Linux download page.

2)       Below the Download RealPlayer button, you will notice two links- RPM Package and DEB package. Select the DEB Package to download.

3)       Install the RealPlayer.

4)       To play .rmvb just right click any of the rmvb file and select ‘Open with Real Player’.

5)       If you want that after you double click any rmvb file it should automatically launch Real Player to playback the file you need to carry out simple steps.

6)       To do so, just right click on any .rmvb file and select ‘Properties’.

7)       Navigate to the “Open With” tab.

8)       Check ‘RealPlayer’ and click Close.

Mac OS X

Method#1- Using Real Player

Real player is the option to play the RMVB files. Just Download RealPlayer 11 for Mac and follow the simple steps as suggested above to make it default opening media player for RMVB types of files.
