| More

In my previous post I walked you through step by step process on how to install bbPress Forum to the wordpress blog. After you have installed the bbPress forum to your wordpress blog follow the steps to change default bbPress template or install custom bbPress themes.

bbPress Theme Selection-

The default theme of bbPress forum is not very eye catchy and strong. You can change the template easily. BBshowcase has provided a number of templates for forums driven by bbPress. I have installed the Structure template to my forum. Check it out here. Complete list of bbPress templates and themes are available on BBshowcase here.

Installing new or custom bbPress theme-

Installing bbPress themes is very easy. Just follow the simple steps below.

  1. Create a directory with name ‘my-templates’ in bbPress root directory. Suppose you have installed the bbPress forum to ‘forum’ folder (follow the installation steps above). Now you need to create a folder with name ‘my-templates’.
  2. Select the theme and download it to your desktop. Unzip the folder. Now upload the theme to your server in your my-templates directory using any FTP client. You may use cute FTP, FileZilla or any other FTP software. Make sure the transfer mode is set to automatic. Do not FTP in ‘ASCII’ mode; else the existing template or theme images present inside the folder will not be visible to your forum.
  3. Login to the forum http://www.yoursite/forum as a Keymaster.
  4. Click Admin and then select the Design tab. Your new theme will be added under Available theme. Select your new theme to make it your current bbPress theme.
  5. If you wish to design your own bbPress theme then follow the simple steps suggested by bbPress here.

After you have installed the bbPress forum and changed the theme that fits best to your website or blog taste, it now the time to install plugins. I have compiled a list of 20 bbPress plugins along with the installation steps that you must install in order to make your forum much more robust, flexible and different from others.
