You can now store Linux on your USB drive using Slax. Slax is a modern, portable, small and fast Linux operating system which you can run Linux from a CD, USB Flash drive, MP3 Player, Camera or even from a Hard Drive. Slax provides lots of feature such as XWindow system, KDE desktop with K-Office, Internet browsing, e-Mail, Instant messaging, CD/DVD burning and ripping, Audio and Video encoding, Multimedia players.
Due to modular approach any other software can be added in Slax easily. If you want to add your favorite text editor, networking tool or game, simply download a module with the software and copy it to Slax, no need to install, no need to configure.
How to put Slax to USB drive or disk
- Download Slax for USB in TAR format (ZIP archive).
- Extract (unzip) the archive directly to your USB flash key, to an MP3 player or even to a Hard Disk.
How to make it bootable
- When Slax is unpacked to your device, it will create ‘/boot/’ and ‘/slax/’ directories there.
- Navigate to the newly created /boot/ directory and run bootinst.sh script (if you are in Linux) or bootinst.bat script (if you are in Windows).
- It will install syslinux bootloader to your device’s MBR (master boot record). Syslinux works only on FAT filesystem (which is widely used on most USB flash keys, Cameras and MP3 players). You are done.
