There are number of restrictions that are tied up with the scanned copy of any document. Some of them are-
1. You cannot copy-paste excerpts from the scanned document as required.
2. Difficult to search for certain keywords in the scanned copy because in scanned documents you cannot search for the text using ctrl+f.
The only way to avoid re-typing is to convert the scanned document into the format which is easy to search and edit. OCR is the technique to achieve this. Optical Character Recognition (OCR) takes text from a scanned page and converts it into a text file, or word processing document. You can read or extract text from a scanned document and convert it into a readable Word document using Microsoft Office Document Imaging as discussed before. You can use SimpleOCR also to read text from scanned page.
JOCR is yet another freeware tool that enables you to capture the image on the screen and convert the captured image to text. With JOCR text can be copied from any files and images on the screen such as protected Web pages, PDF files, error messages.
JOCR requires Microsoft Office 2003 or higher version. If JCOR does not work, you need to install “Microsoft Office Document Imaging” (MODI) that is included in the setup file of Microsoft Office.
