How to Convert your scanned pages or images to text files or Word documents

Recently, I received a scanned copy of an important document which I was asked to re-type into MS Word. I was watching Oscar Winner “Slumdog Millionaire” and wanted to avoid retyping the document. I searched in google to find if there is any free solution that can extract text from scanned documents.

I found several commercial OCR software solutions ($100 – $500) available to convert scanned images to text, Word, HTML or searchable PDF. But I did not wanted to spend a single penny.
