How to install, setup or integrate bbPress Forum to your website or Blog?

| More

High traffic generation to website or blog is not as easy as it seems. Apart from link exchange, participating in active forums, leaving comments on other blogs and submitting your post to Digg, Technorati or reditt there is another quicktip using which you can generate high traffic to your blog. You can increase your content page count by adding and promoting a forum on your site or blog.  Forum pages can contain quality written content with quality title tags and the pages are generated dynamically, whenever members of the forum write or reply to posts. It is advisable to set-up or install a forum to your blog or website like the one which I have installed on my WordPress driven blog.

bbPress is an open source and free forum software from the creators of WordPress. It’s small, light and easy to use features are gaining popularity among the webmasters. Follow the steps below to install or integrate bbPress on an existing WordPress Blog-

1)       Download the latest stable version of bbPress.

2)       Unzip it and rename the folder bbPress to ‘forum’. Suppose you have downloaded the zip file with name ‘bbpress-0.9.0.4.zip’. Unzip bbPress forum package. You will notice a folder with name ‘bbPress’. Suppose you want your forum’s url to be http://www.yoursite/forum then rename bbPress folder to ‘forum’. You can rename to any other name as well.

3)       After renaming the folder, FTP the ‘forum’ folder to the root directory of your blog using any FTP client. You may use cute FTP, FileZilla or any other FTP software. Make sure the transfer mode is set to automatic. Do not FTP in ‘ASCII’ mode; else the existing template images present inside the folder will not be visible.

4)       Now visit the ‘cpanel’ of your hosting account. Create a new mysql database, new user with all the privileges along with the password. Add the newly created user to the newly created mySql database. Save the information.

5)       Visit the intended URL of the bbPress site. For Example, if you have transferred the ‘forum’ folder to the server then the intended URL would be http://www.yoursite/forum.

6)       You will be greeted with the bbPress installer. Just follow the instructions in the installer. It will prompt you to enter the database name, username and password. Enter the details you created in Step 4.

7)       You can skip the step wherein the bbPress installer prompts you to integrate the Wordpress and bbPress Logins.

8)       Once done the bbPress installer will prompt you to enter the username and password for Keymaster Account. It will also ask you to enter the email address. Enter the details. You are almost done.

9)       You will receive an email with Login and password details. Visit the forum URL http://www.yoursite/forum . Enter the key master Login information. Your forum is now ready to help the community.

10)   Navigate to Admin -> Manage -> Forums to categorize the forum Topics. Save settings.

thanks! very helpful. one thing might have been easier... unzipping the folder on the server instead of locally. Definitely a good idea to rename it Forum and just that.

  • Hey man!
I designed my own bbPress theme and it works fine but when I use it on a bbPress installation v0.9.0.4 integrated with WP 2.7.1 then I get a fatal error that a call to undefined function bb_uri() was made.
I am clueless at the moment and will appreciate if you can help me out.
BTW I have already asked at the bbPress forums but havn't got any response yet.
