URL structure of any website or a blog should be as simple as possible. The structure should be user friendly so that a reader can identify the content inside the article by looking into the URL rather than just long ID numbers. In this article I would be telling you how to make SEO friendly URL structure so that you can rank your blog or website article higher in Google and other search engines.
Follow the 7 simple tips for better URL structure.
1) Keep the URL short and descriptive – According to Matt Cutts – “If you can make your title four- or five-words long – and it is pretty natural. If you have got a three, four or five words in your URL that can be perfectly normal. As it gets a little longer, then it starts to look a little worse. Now, our algorithms typically will just weight those words less and just not give you as much credit.”
2) Instead of using ID and number in URL, use keywords – It gives an idea to the reader about web content. For example, if you search in a Google about ‘Blogging Tips’, you will get number of results with different URL’s. Some of them are less appealing to users. For example, the URL (http://www.example.com/index.php?id_sezione=360&sid=3a5e) has very complex URL structure. Reader cannot make it out easily about the content inside the article. It is the possibility that the URL may contain the objectionable content. The results with URL structure http://www.example.com/10-tips-for-effective-blogging drives more traffic as the user tends to click those URL’s.
3) Matt Cutts recommends using hyphens (-) instead of underscores (_) in URLs. The URL http://www.example.com/blogging-tips.html is much more useful to us than http://www.example.com/bloggingtips.html or http://www.example.com/blogging_tips.html
4) URL’s are case sensitive. Most of the people use standard lower case URL’s. It is advisable to use lower case URL because if you are using URL’s in upper case and somebody links to your post with lower case URL, both of you might loose Google PR Juice.
5) Avoid URL structure that contains multiple parameters – Googlebot may consume much more bandwidth than necessary, or may be unable to completely index all the content on your site if your URL contains multiple parameters.
6) Avoid using session ID and sorting parameters in URL. Session IDs, for example, can create massive amounts of duplication and a greater number of URLs.
7) Do not use exe in your URL’s – Using exe will disallow the Google crawler to crawl the webpage.
