When you sign up with a web host, you have to be careful because there are many things that they will offer you, but just as many things that they won’t tell you either. So do your research and find out what the best deals and services you can get from a web host for your own needs. You’ll be surprised about how many things you do yourself instead of even thinking of getting a web host. Here are 10 things that web hosts don’t want you to know:
1) Overselling web space – You may wonder why some web hosting companies can offer you gigabytes and terabytes of free space and not worry about cost. This is because web host claim to provide unlimited space but the truth is if you use too much of their CPU usage your website might get suspended. So be careful when uploading lots of files, you may find they have all disappeared once you use up a certain limit and the web host will not hold itself accountable to any of your losses.
2) Over-marketing – When web hosts tell you that they have been in this business for more than 20 years, don’t believe them. The hosting industry didn’t exist in the 1980’s so be mindful about these marketing claims. Even a few of the larger well establish web hosts claim to have been in business for 10+ years but if you do some basic research you will find this to be false.
3) Over-estimating their Datacenter Area - When a web host posts pictures to impress of hundreds of servers in their “datacenter”, don’t be fooled. Many web hosts just resell their web space, so check their business address and find out if those claims are true.
4) Underestimating Offered Deals - A web host may offer you big amounts of space for $5 monthly and may charge you $25 at the end of the month. Be aware of extra charges to your account. Do research on the web hosting packages so you don’t get unpleasantly surprised by unaccounted costs.
5) 24/7 Service (Email Only) - When web hosts offer you service for the low-cost amount of space, this offer is probably not as sincere as you think. Many web hosts run on a low budget and can barely afford to have a technical crew on standby to deal with your problems. Often web hosts will claim 24/7 Support but only offer email support. One of the main reasons they offer email support only is they are usually a one person show. How would you really know if they are sleeping when you need help? We suggest you look for web hosts that provide true 24/7 support via phone and email. It’s also a good practice to test them out prior to sign-up to see how fast their response times are.
6) Not as Experienced as They Appear - Many web hosts do not have the experience in web hosting as they may say they do. A lot of them just run the space from their own CPUs to save money. If they advertise a service, call them and find out how reliable and competent they really are in catering to your needs. Otherwise, look for a better web host.
7) Web Hosting is No Their Exclusive Service - Many web hosts are generalists and may be involved in three or more other online businesses aside from web hosting. This will affect the amount of service they can dedicate to you as a customer. Find out what other projects your web host offers outside hosting, before you decide to choose them to them to host your site.
8) Bandwidth Promises Not Fulfilled - Many smaller and lower costing web hosts will offer tons bandwidth. This promise will probably not be fulfilled as advertised. To protect yourself from broken promises be-sure to read their TOS carefully and find out their upgrade procedures if your websites traffic grows.
9) Overcrowded Servers - Web hosts usually overcrowd their servers with hundreds of accounts which is probably why they keep poor track of servicing and bandwidth. Find out more about the web host and its reliability as a hosting service before signing up. There are several independent companies that track the uptime of most hosting companies and this can help you make your decision.
10) Threatened Security - Because of the hundreds of accounts kept on each server, web hosts cannot guarantee the attack of malware on the server at any given time. With increased accounts and lessened oversight you can expect there to be some kind of risk posed to accounts.
